Venetian round tower
In the middle of 15th century the round tower was constructed by the Venetian rulers to defend the harbor. This was a typical Renaissance round tower, relatively low with thick walls to endure the cannon fire. The upper parts of the walls lean outward, which made it easier to target attackers. In 1774. the tower was renovated for the first time. The new ruler of the Kvarner islands was Austria, which had no need for the Veli Losinj fortification.
